Red and Yellow customs

Installation

2018

In Vietnam I see a very strong and specific food culture. When you dine or have a cup of tea you sit on tiny stools. In the street ladies sell fruits and vegetables in big woven baskets or plastic boxes. The use of material is very different. Plastic and natural materials go hand in hand as tools to serve, sell, prepare and eat food. The new and the traditional materials create an interesting cultural twist. Is food prepared with plastic tools as authentic as food prepared with natural tools? Does the material affect the food culture? And if it does, how? With the installation I created I want to show how materials on both ends of the spectrum connect the food culture in Vietnam. As far away as they are from each other, material-wise speaking, they fulfil the same function. Are they both valuable to the contemporary food culture in this country?
